Cancer is one among the leading deadly diseases in the world. In order to treat it doctors from Sydney come up with a new method for the treatment of cancers in patients. Their investigation mainly deals with the use of bacteria to kill the cancerous cells.
Scientists developed a new method of killing tumor cells using bacterial cell membrane and created a minicell. The minicell consists of anticancer drug such as chemicals coated with antibodies. These antibodies were designed in such a way that they are very specific to the receptors of tumor cells but not the normal cells.
When the minicell that is prepared from bacteria is injected into human beings by drug delivery mechanism the tumor cells attracts the bacteria and the minicells rich in anticancer drug and antibodies kill the tumor cells rapidly.
Special care was taken regarding the preparation of minicells size. As there is a chance that larger cells may escape from blood vessel and accumulate in the liver etc and create secondary infection and side effects too. Hence the sizes of the minicells were maintained in such a way that its diameter is 100 times smaller than human hair.
Specific drugs like paclitaxel were used as an anticancer drug to treat cancer and doxorubicin against Brain tumors. An eye opening feature of this mini cell is it can be administered to the patients safely depending on their genetic profile, without any side effects. But some patients may have fever on the day of infusion.
